Cafer ALTAŞ, M.D. has been working at our hospital as an anesthesia and reanimation specialist since 2018. Anesthesia involves use of medicinal drugs to sedate the patient’s body to prevent sensation of pain and allow the surgeon to operate comfortably to ensure safe surgery. The type of anesthesia used depends on the type of surgery and suitability of the patient. In general anesthesia, the entire respiratory process is mechanized. In regional anesthesia, only the operated region is anesthetized. Spinal anesthesia is a type of anesthesia where the anesthetic agent is injected in the lumbar region between the vertebrae through the spinal membrane. In epidural anesthesia, the anesthetic agent is injected in the back or lower back region, again between the vertebrae using a very thin tube (catheter) applied through the spinal membrane.
